To understand childcare in neighbouring Germany, it is essential to examine the different developments in East and West Germany following the Second World War. Whilst early childhood education, upbringing and care were prioritised differently in the Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic, the 1990 reunification brought together two systems that had followed separate paths for decades. These differences continue to shape the structures of childcare to this day. Prof. Dr Samuel Jahreiß’s lecture traces this historical development and analyses its long-term effects.

Prof. Dr Samuel Jahreiß is Professor of Social Work at the Saxony Cooperative State University and heads the Social Work – Early childhood education degree programme at the Breitenbrunn campus.
